MBCC Group Accelerates Analytics across Lines of Business

MBCC Group is a global leader in innovative construction chemicals and solutions. Following their acquisition from BASF Group by a global private equity firm, MBCC Group set out to build a data environment from the ground up with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud as the foundation for their reporting landscape.

SAP Data Warehouse Cloud unites data from MBCC Group’s ERP systems: SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business One, and other systems to create a single source of truth for the organization. With this centralized data feeding into their reporting tool, MBCC Group has accelerated their decision making.

For Patrik Junker, Senior Manager at Accenture, an SAP partner who works with MBCC Group on implementation, "MBCC Group needs a flexible and scalable solution that can sit between their ERP systems and their analytical tools. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud ticked all the boxes and, on top of that, provides easy-to-use and secure data modeling environment through Spaces.”

Challenges

MBCC Group offers its products under different brands worldwide. SAP S/4HANA is the group’s main ERP system and is run by the larger brands and legal entities. The group’s smaller legal entities run SAP Business One – with a total of 25 separate instances. Other data sources included SAP SuccessFactors, Salesforce, and flat files containing historical data from SAP BW/4HANA.

Without centralized data, starting a new analytics project or creating a report was time consuming. “A lot of the time data wasn’t available unless you asked one of our legal entities to upload it into one of the bigger systems from the smaller ERPs,” says Ines Marcos, Specialist Global Controlling & Reporting Specialist at MBCC Group. Analyzing data required a lot of manual processes like pulling data from different systems and integrating it. This slowed down the entire business and its ability to make quick decisions backed by data. “It was cumbersome to log on to 25 different systems and pull the data, then integrate data from SAP S/4HANA, and other sources,” says Marcos. “Employees found it frustrating to generate a report, it would often take days to make a management report.”

Solutions

To jumpstart the implementation, MBCC Group joined SAP Data Warehouse Cloud Early Adopter Care program. Powered by SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud connected MBCC Group’s data sources across on-prem and cloud to create a single source of truth. To create one robust data layer with centralized data access, ERP data from SAP S/4HANA Cloud was integrated with data from SAP Business One. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud can replicate data in real-time from SAP S/4HANA Cloud. Connecting the two is simple with the data integration connector.

Additionally, MBCC Group’s 12 Salesforce reports were integrated using a third-party solution from Adverity, which can quickly and efficiently connect hundreds of sources with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud. Finally, flat files from other sources like SAP SuccessFactors are uploaded. The organization integrates Microsoft Power BI with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud for reporting and analytics. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is an open solution that connects easily to SAP and non-SAP data sources, third-party tools, and applications.

For different departments or brands across the MBCC Group, IT can set up Spaces – virtual work environments – with specific data connections. Spaces provides IT with central governance and employees with isolated environments where they can model company data or upload and integrate local data. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud offers self-service data modeling using SQL or graphical editors.

Flexibility and scalability were core requirements for MBCC Group when they were considering data warehousing options. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is a SaaS solution that requires no upfront investment and SAP takes care of management and maintenance. Compared to more expensive on-premise solutions, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud gives MBCC Group the flexibility to start small and scale up over time when their needs change.

SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and SAP S/4HANA give our data purpose. With our data united in a single solution, we gained quick access to data and can accelerate our business outcomes. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is an integral part of our company’s cloud journey.

Results

With SAP S/4HANA and SAP Business One data centralized in SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, MBCC Group has access to data whenever they need it. “With a single source of truth, employees no longer have to manually access and extract data from dozens of different systems,” says Holger Schwenk-Kircher, Global Process Owner Reporting at MBCC Group. “This has cut down the time needed to start new analytics projects by days.” In addition, now that SAP Data Warehouse Cloud handles data modeling with a direct connection to the ERP systems, projects run faster and no longer burden the ERPs.

“This has cut down the time needed to start new analytics projects by days.” In addition, now that SAP Data Warehouse Cloud handles data modeling with a direct connection to the ERP systems, projects run faster and no longer burden the ERPs.

In this new setup, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud supports over 20 Microsoft Power BI dashboards for Supply Chain, Procurement, Sales, HR, Accounting, and more, that provide top management with insights into the KPIs they need to steer the business. “We have 12 Salesforce reports feeding directly into SAP Data Warehouse Cloud,” says Marcos. “The solution’s openness to connect to all data sources and applications – both SAP and non-SAP – has been critical in getting the reporting up and running.”

Looking forward, MBCC Group plans to set up Spaces for different brands and departments across the organization so they can test new ideas and model data in a sandbox environment. More business users will be able to jump into their designated Space and take advantage of enterprise data and connect it with local flat files. At the same time, Space management helps IT retain central governance over the entire data landscape.
