Telenor Norway Simplifies Their Operations with SAP HANA Cloud

Telenor Norway is a part of Telenor Group, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies. Headquartered in Norway, their services are used across the Nordics, the Middle East, and much of Southeast Asia, with 182 million customers and operations in many fast-growing markets.

In order to simplify their operations, cut down on costs, and unify their disparate data sources to gain faster insight, Telenor turned to the new SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise service. Now, the time it takes Telenor to provision a new instance will be cut down from weeks to just minutes. Challenges: Defining the Data Problem

Telenor uses SAP ASE on-premise to process vast amounts of transactional data, such as call data records, account subscriptions, and sim card information. During peak times, their databases can process more than a million requests per minute. To keep up with ever-increasing demand, Telenor needs to be able to scale quickly and flexibly. But with their current on-premise setup, it can take up to a month from the initial hardware order to installation and readiness. As their customer base keeps growing around, Telenor needs a more sustainably scalable solution.

Telenor also uses SAP HANA on-premise. They have many SAP HANA and SAP ASE databases running similar workloads. Telenor desires a way to standardize their operations and minimize overlap by bringing their disparate databases together, so that users can eliminate redundancy between their different database instances.

The cost of running all these different databases, as well as the cost of installing and maintaining hardware from different providers in different locations, adds up quickly and can be difficult to keep track of. Telenor would like to simplify their overview of what they’re spending and where.

Solutions

SAP HANA Cloud’s new adaptive server enterprise service is built to provide the power of SAP ASE in the cloud. SAP HANA Cloud also offers users a single access point to their SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise instances via the SAP BTP Cockpit, where users can see and move between their different databases with ease. This way, Telenor will be better able to allocate resources and maximize efficiency: if certain regions are growing faster than others, they’ll be able to adjust for that demand.

Finally, SAP HANA Cloud’s consumption-based pricing gives users a clear overview of their TCO while ensuring that they’re only paying for what they use. As Telenor uses SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise, they’ll streamline their spend and remove unnecessary costs.

Results

With SAP HANA Cloud, Telenor’s time to provision a new database instance will be cut down from weeks to less than five minutes, greatly increasing their ability to scale. SAP HANA Cloud will allow Telenor to standardize and simplify their operations like never before.

Telenor is looking forward to centralizing their databases in a cloud-native environment, where they can strategize and allocate resources for maximum efficiency. Many of their custom-built applications also run on SAP ASE, and Telenor will be able to bring these to the cloud with minimal reconfiguration.
