  • Using SAP HANA Cloud as your one-stop shop for all your data needs

    SAP HANA Cloud was created with flexibility and elasticity as core values. This means you can go beyond simply moving data into your SAP HANA Cloud database.

    With SAP HANA Cloud, you can bring in data stored either on premise, or in other cloud providers, by virtualizing the data or replicating it. You can also choose whether the data goes directly in memory, into the disk storage, called SAP HANA native storage extension, or into the data lake.

    Being able to access the right data from the same platform, no matter where the data is actually physically stored, is one of the biggest advantages of using SAP HANA Cloud. Whether you are using a remote connection or physically moving data into your SAP HANA Cloud database, you are in complete control and able to change your strategy as needed.

    Using SAP HANA Cloud as your one-stop shop for your data needs allows you a flexible and elastic data management solution for organizations of all sizes.

    Access security

    Make use of the user and role management capabilities in SAP HANA Cloud. By giving you the ability to limit access and permissions at a granular level, you can make sure the right people have access to right data and actions.

    Encryption and data privacy

    In SAP HANA Cloud, we support a broad range of encryption capabilities, including data-at-rest encryption, which is configured by default, and communication encryption.

    By using data masking and data anonymization, you can protect sensitive data and reduce the information exposed while still being able to do analytics on whole data sets. Find out more about data masking and data anonymization in our technical documentation:


    Last but not least, you can define audit policies, tailored to the type of activities you wish audit – up to and including firefighting audit policies to audit everything. This allows you not only to comply with your organization’s auditing needs, but also be able to retrace any actions if you run into issues.

  • Creating connections to remote sources

    One of the key features of SAP HANA Cloud is the ability to connect to remote data sources, no matter how different or disparate they might be. One reason to create connections to various sources in SAP HANA Cloud is to be able to use data virtualization technology. This allows you to use data stored in remote sources by creating various virtual tables. In SAP HANA Cloud, this data virtualization technology is called SAP HANA smart data access.

    To use SAP HANA smart data access, you’ll first need to create a remote data source. SAP HANA smart data access makes remote connections using ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), a standard application programming interface (API) for accessing database management systems (DBMS).

    That’s a lot of complicated language, but it’s actually easy to connect to remote sources in SAP HANA Cloud. You will need to have at least one SAP HANA Cloud instance already created as well as the right permissions both in SAP HANA Cloud and in your remote source to complete this task.

    Also, you can add remote sources both from the SAP Cloud Platform Cockpit and from the SAP HANA Database Explorer. Here we’ll show you how to do it from the Database Explorer:

    1. In the SAP Cloud Platform Cockpit, find and select your Space and find your SAP HANA Cloud instance.
    2. In the instance tile, click on the “Open In” button and select “SAP HANA Database Explorer”.
    3. In the SAP HANA Database Explorer, go into the panel on the left-hand side. Expand the item “Catalog”
    4. Right click on “Remote Sources” and then click on “Show Remote Sources”. All available remote sources are listed in the lower left-hand corner.
    5. Right-click again on “Remote Sources”, then click on “Add Remote Source”.
    6. The prompt to “Add Remote Source” will appear:
    7. After providing the name of the source, click on the drop-down menu to view the Adapter Name. All available Adapter Names will appear, select the appropriate adapter for the source you are adding.
    8. Complete the Property information by filling in the Data Source Name, Driver, any Extra Adapter Properties, and your credentials.
    9. After you’ve made the connections, you see all remote sources listed on the screen in the Remote Sources tab. You are done!

    When you click on one remote source, you will be able to search all the databases, schema, objects, or types within this source. You can then view the individual remote objects. These can be, for example, actual tables of data. To access individual tables, check the boxes next to each table you want to access. Then click on “Create Virtual Objects” on the right-hand side of the screen.

    You’ll get prompted to enter an object name for your virtual table and to select a target schema.

    This way, you will be mapping the fields of the remote table to a local table. And this local table points to the remote table. The newly created local table will now appear on the bottom left side, under “Tables” in your Database Explorer.

    Because you created a virtual table, you have now optimized real-time access to this data source. You can now access data a lot faster, because it is now stored as a virtual object.
