SAP Data Warehouse Cloud runs on SAP HANA Cloud, but these are separate solutions. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is focused on advanced modeling capabilities and collaboration with business users of all technical levels. SAP HANA Cloud, as a DBaaS, is focused on data management strategies.
SAP BW can access SAP HANA Cloud and the data lake as a federated source. You can also connect from SAP HANA Cloud to SAP BW, depending on your needs.
Some companies opt to connect their SAP BW to SAP HANA Cloud to extend their on-premise investment with cloud data storage.
SAP HANA Cloud offers databases as a service. SAP manages parts of this service, like the complete hardware setup and other cloud-native aspects. Customers get one super admin database user and can then create customized roles and permissions that fit their organization.
You will have access to the SAP HANA Cockpit, a tool for administering and monitoring your SAP HANA database, withinSAP HANA Cloud. Here, you can monitor various performance metrics, like CPU, memory, response time, disk I/O, and network to confirm contention on infrastructure.

In the SAP HANA Cloud trial, you can test the SAP HANA database and the data lake services. The configuration of your SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA database trial instance is 30GB of memory, 2vCPUs, and 120GB of storage. You can only have one database and one data lake instance (4vCPUs, 256GB of storage) in your SAP HANA Cloud trial account.
The SAP HANA Cloud trial offers you to experience most of the features of these two services, but it does not include the Machine Learning capabilities, the JSON Document Store, nor the Data Lake Files component.
SAP HANA Cloud can be added to any existing trial account by following these steps. If you already use other SAP Business Technology services, those will not be affected by the SAP HANA Cloud trial.
Sizing and Pricing
Elasticity means that SAP HANA Cloud can adjust the allocated compute/storage resource consumption depending on the actual workload. Resource adjustment in SAP HANA Cloud can be achieved via a self-service.
The native storage extension is enabled by default in an SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA database instance. Data in native storage extension is managed by the user. You still need to explicitly specify tables/partitions/columns to be page loadable to take advantage of native storage extension. In the future, there will be also the ability to provision incremental disk storage to increase native storage extension capacity. In a later update, we plan to automate data management in native storage extension. However, you will be always able to control the native storage extension.
There are lower prices and lower total cost of ownership compared to other offerings. That’s because SAP HANA Cloud introduces a cloud-native database architecture that directly benefits from the cost-efficiency of hyperscaler’s infrastructure.
Each service within SAP HANA Cloud has its own minimal configuration. For the SAP HANA database, it’s 30GB memory and 120GB storage (with or without data). For the data lake, you have a minimum of 4 vCPUs and 1 TB storage on AWS or 4TB on Azure.
For SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise, you have a minimum of 4 vCPUs, 16 GB memory, and 128 GiB storage. Finally, for the ASE Replication service, you have a minimum of 2 vCPUs, 8 GB memory, 16 GB data storage, and 4 GB system storage.
Connections and Access
For data virtualization, SAP HANA Cloud supports many adapters from SAP HANA smart data access/SAP HANA smart data integration on-premises. Additionally, SAP HANA Cloud supports data virtualization from AWS Athena (S3) and Google BigQuery. For the Adaptive Server Enterprise service, you can use CIS Proxy Tables.
The SAP HANA Cloud adapters are different from the Open Connectors in SAP Business Technology Platform. However, SAP HANA Cloud provides an SAP HANA smart data integration (SDI) adapter that integrates with the Open Connectors framework in SAP Business Technology Platform.
SAP HANA Cloud uses two replication modes: Remote Table Replication (RTR) for HANA-HANA and SAP HANA smart data integration replication for HANA-AnyDB. RTR comes with its own logging and SAP HANA smart data integration relies on the adapter capabilities for the corresponding remote database (and if the remote DB supports a DB logging API).
You gain secure access to on-premises data sources with SAP HANA smart data integration DP Agent. . You can connect SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA database to on-premise databases using the Cloud Connector from the SAP Connectivity service.
SAP HANA Cloud can connect to S3 and ingest data. We federate with AWS Athena to access S3. SAP HANA Cloud can also ingest data directly from S3 via the built-in data lake.
Yes, the Document Store is available in SAP HANA Cloud. and can be activated for the SAP HANA database. Activation can be triggered via Self-Service in the SAP HANA Cloud Central.
SAP HANA Cloud provides various performance analysis tools for the SAP HANA database and Adaptive Server Enterprise services with the SAP HANA Cockpit. There, you can analyze problematic workloads or queries in your application.

SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise supports a minimum size of 128 GB and a maximum size of 65536 GB. You can choose from 4 to 60 vCPUs, and you can choose a ratio of memory to vCPU of 4 GB:1vCPU, 8 GB:1vCPU, or 16GB:1vCPU.
SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise replication supports a minimum storage size of 16 GB and a maximum storage size of 1024 GB. You can choose from 2 to 30 vCPUS, with 4 GB of RAM supported for each vCPU.
SAP HANA Cloud, data lake supports a minimum size of 1 TB on AWS, and a minimum of 4 TB on Microsoft Azure, with a maximum of 90 TB supported on each.
These sizes will continue to evolve as SAP continues to invest in these services.
SAP HANA Cloud and SAP HANA’s SQL engine can process data being stored in the data lake, but not in SAP HANA Cloud, adaptive server enterprise. Multi-model processing will only be available within SAP HANA Cloud and the SAP HANA core engine. You will be able to access the data lake through virtual tables, but the expectation is that performance will not be good if analyzing large amounts of data.
Multi-model analytics natively in SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise and data lake are presently not available.

Data is loaded into data lake row at a time via traditional SQL DML. Or, you can bulk load data from an object store (eg., Azure Storage, S3) using the LOAD TABLE statement.
SAP HANA and IQ have been working together for many years, and many optimizations have been made in the SAP HANA smart data access communications between the two. One example is that IQ and SAP HANA can exchange data in larger, more easily processed chunks (ITABS) than a standard SAP HANA smart data access connection to a third-party library, which would only exchange data row by row. These functionalities are also available in the SAP HANA Cloud data lake.
Data Hub/Data Intelligence can connect to SAP HANA Cloud as a data source and destination, so you have the full range of machine learning capabilities available.

This provides existing SAP HANA customers with more flexibility than their current on-premise solution, without having to start from scratch.
