With the exponential rise of data from many location-based sources including mobile phones, IoT devices, asset management systems, social media, imagery, and drone data, as well as other upcoming transformative technologies such as 5G, the need to leverage this information has become critical to understanding the world around us — and how we as individuals and our organizations interact within it.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) typically used to analyze this data are no longer relegated solely to cartographers or mapping experts. Rather, they’re at the forefront of many enterprises’ core data management strategy and vision.  By using geospatial data, organizations in numerous industries solve challenges as varied as optimizing supply chains to lowering carbon emissions — or even preparing for and dealing with pandemics and natural disasters. Geospatial has become a critical part of the enterprise data ecosystem and has moved beyond traditional asset-based industries.

Regardless of the use case or industry, organizations need to be able to store, analyze, and integrate geospatial data into key business processes. Only then can they ultimately gain value from the data, have greater insight, make better decisions, and be more innovative. This data needs to be democratized and shared across all lines of business – not locked away in silos for only GIS or mapping experts to work with, understand, and use.

So how can organizations add geospatial data as a core strategic data asset to compete and thrive in today’s environment? It starts with breaking down the silos between GIS and IT to bring spatial data together with enterprise data.

Esri and SAP: Elevating the Power of Geospatial Data

For over 20 years, SAP and Esri, the global leader in GIS and location intelligence, have partnered to help our customers drive new insights and value through the tight integration of our platforms. Helping enable our joint customers’ journey to the cloud, Esri now supports SAP HANA Cloud as an enterprise geodatabase.  This allows customers to take advantage of increased performance, lower total cost of ownership, and easier integration of enterprise data with geospatial data in a cloud-native environment. SAP HANA Cloud is fully supported for Esri’s ArcGIS Enterprise (from version 10.8.1 onwards) and ArcGIS Pro (from version 2.6 onwards).

Organizations can now run SAP HANA Cloud as the underlying database service for the ArcGIS Enterprise authoritative system of record either on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid deployment.  Customers gain the benefit of a fully managed and high-performing database platform with the economics, flexibility, scalability, and ease of consumption of the cloud, while bringing the data to life with ArcGIS.

Since 2012, SAP and Esri have worked together to make SAP HANA a highly optimized database for ArcGIS.  As the only in-memory cloud database supported by Esri, SAP HANA delivers unique performance and productivity benefits that change the way GIS and business teams do their work. Together, SAP and Esri help our customers tackle the most pressing challenges in ways that were not possible before.  With SAP HANA Cloud, customers can solve even more complex challenges in a highly flexible and integrated environment.

Solving Geospatial Data Challenges

ArcGIS is a remarkably powerful solution. It provides organizations with the tools they need to make an impact – whether they’re looking to improve services, engage stakeholders, or successfully launch any number of other important use cases. However, this requires a strong underlying data management foundation for organizations to really leverage and unlock these robust capabilities.

The truth is that too many data landscapes are heterogeneous and fragmented across on-premises, cloud, and different infrastructure technologies. Storing the data is easy enough, but accessing and using it in a meaningful way, that’s a lot harder. Turning sophisticated models into real insights is impossible when silos exist. All of this is especially true for geospatial data, as operational data often rests in a completely different location. In addition, organizations need data in real-time and can’t afford to wait around due to low data processing performance or data movement and duplication.

Fortunately, running ArcGIS on SAP HANA Cloud as a geodatabase solves these data management challenges.  SAP HANA Cloud provides a single gateway to all data within and outside an enterprise.  It supports a multi-cloud and hybrid deployment model and has the ability to virtualize data from any source.  In addition, it continues to provide strong multi-model OLAP and OLTP capabilities in one singular platform. By deploying ArcGIS on SAP HANA Cloud, customers will be able to:

Increase productivity by eliminating mundane administrative tasks. Instead, focusing on the results, running deeper analytics, and providing more information products for the business stakeholders.

Increase team agility with the ability to ask “what if” questions and delivering insight immediately to the business, operations, or customers.  No need to wait because there’s no data movement or ETL (Extract Transform and Load) scripts write.

Gain acceleration and run complex spatial analytics in fractions of a second.  Other database platforms may require aggregate tables and indices or perhaps physically move data to ArcGIS to improve performance.  As an alternative to bringing the data to the processing, bring the processing to the data.  Instead of running one analytic in ten or more minutes, run five or ten different analytics in seconds when processing ArcGIS workloads on SAP HANA Cloud.

Experience seamless integration of GIS with SAP S/4HANA by having your ArcGIS data on the same platform. A feature in SAP S/4HANA called CDS (Core Data Services) Views adds a powerful capability to ArcGIS. It creates virtual tables in SAP HANA of the SAP enterprise and operational data that other applications can access. This makes it easy to expose asset status from SAP S/4HANA and combine with Esri GIS data an Esri webmap.  It also means you now have a single source of truth of both GIS and operational data available to any application in real-time.

For example, you can provide field workers with real-time asset status to help increase wrench time or enable your emergency responders with up-to-date equipment information. The City of San Diego did just this by providing firefighters with the status of fire hydrants so they would never show up to a dead hydrant. Check out this video to see how Scott Daeschner, Deputy Director for the City of San Diego, uses ArGIS Enterprise on SAP HANA.
